Biographical Information

Work & Books ...

I am president and founder of Variable Symbols, a company that specializes in consulting and training in technical software. I was an instructor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University where I taught CS50, Problem Solving with Mathematica. I have also written several books to assist people in using mathematical software (computer algebra systems).

I received a B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Birmingham, U.K. I received an M.S. in Operations Research from UC Berkeley, and an M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University.

Squash, Cycling, Film...

I used to play squash and bicycle. These days I spend my time chasing, playing, reading, singing with my toddlers, Sarah and Louis

I enjoy documentary films. Before having Sarah and Louis, I regularly attended the Sundance Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival. By the way, you need not be in the film industry to attend these festivals. Just request an application for the film festival. Then book a hotel room and a plane ticket at least six months in advance (particularly for Telluride). If you want to increase your chances of getting a festival pass, return the festival application by FedEx or Expressmail the day you receive it.

My family...

I married David desJardins on January 1, 1999, which thankfully happened to be a beautiful warm day (because I bought a sleeveless wedding dress at Jessica McClintock factory outlet).

Here is a photograph of me with my niece Isadora.
